There is an interesting question.
40 years in the wilderness. Moses received the 10C sometime soon into the wilderness and was not allowed to lave the wilderness - therefore <40 years.
WHY?

Why did Moses die?
Moses died without getting to see the Promised Land because the second time he gave the people water on his own authority.
The first time Moses gave people water, by striking his staff against a rock, t Sinai, he did so on the Lords direction, in the name of the Lord. (Exodus 17:6)
The second time Moses gave the people by striking a rock, at kKadesh, as instructed by the Lord (Numbers 20:8-12), Moses adds is own comments of frustration and attitude – “… and he said unto them, Hear now, ye rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock?” (Numbers 20:10)
Christendom will tell you that because Moses added his own negative words in Numbers 20:10 God made Moses die before entering the Promised Land. Sort of like, the people are moving on now and you cannot go with them so die as a punishment.
Deu 32:49 Get thee up into this mountain Abarim, unto mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab, that is over against Jericho; and behold the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel for a possession: 50 And die in the mount whither thou goest up, and be gathered unto thy people; as Aaron thy brother died in mount Hor, and was gathered unto his people: 51 Because ye trespassed against me among the children of Israel at the waters of Meribah-Kadesh, in the wilderness of Zin; because ye sanctified me not in the midst of the children of Israel. 52 Yet thou shalt see the land before thee; but thou shalt not go thither unto the land which I give the children of Israel.
However, Talmudic Jewish commentary suggests that Moses died because he had reach his life span limit of 120 years as commanded in Genesis 6:3 “… (man’s) days shall be an hundred and twenty years.” According to Talmudic legend Moses died on 7 Adar (day and month), exactly on his 120th birthday.
Deu 34:7 And Moses was an hundred and twenty years old when he died: his eye was not dim, nor his natural force abated..
Deu 34:5 So Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the LORD. (the command of the Lord as a punishment in Christendom – or the scripture of Gen 6:3, if you are Jewish)
Deu 34:6 And He (God) buried him (Moses)in a valley in the land of Moab, over against Bethpeor: but no man knoweth of his sepulchre (grave/tomb)unto this day.
Joseph Smith, Jr. and Oliver Cowdery, of the Mormon Church of Latter Day Saints, stated that on April 3, 1836, that no one could ever find the grave site of Moses because Moses was taken to heaven (translated or transfigured) without having tasted death.
The real punishment for Moses was not when he died, but where he died – Deu 32:52 Yet thou shalt see the land before thee; but thou shalt not go thither unto the land which I give the children of Israel.
