Space craft – overheat due to all the electronics – that heat is radiated into space
Apollo 13 – had to shut down – the 22*C temp reached 1*C inside the capsule in 20hrs
Moon Suits – the men wear water-tubing underwear – the back pack has an electric heater to heat the water to keep the astronaut warm

To my surprise – the suits also cooled the astronauts by the sublimation of water ice

(wiki) In an independent space suit, the heat is ultimately transferred to a thin sheet of ice (formed by a separate feed water source). Due to the extremely low pressure in space, the heated ice sublimates directly to water vapor, which is then vented away from the suit.

The ice sublimator consists of sintered nickel plates with microscopic pores which are sized to permit the water to freeze in the plate without damaging it. So when heat needs to be removed, the ice in the pores melts and the water passes through them to form a thin sheet which sublimates (like dry ice). When there is no need for heat to be removed, this water refreezes sealing the plate. The rate of sublimation of the ice is directly proportional to the amount of heat needing to be removed, so the system is self-regulating needing no moving parts. Nasa put out a video explaing the Orion Mission, in this video he admits how dangerous the Van Allen Belts are for humans, so obviously it would not have been possible over 45 years ago.
Lack of knowledge – we did not go through the VAB – we skirted the edge

The Van Allen Belt protects earth from solar radiation. The danger is not the Belt itself but the space beyond the Belt. Shielding is usually made of lead or some other dense heavy metal. Adding heavy shielding would make the weight of a large capsule too heavy to launch.

Fact – every Nuclear Reactor – stores it spend rods in pools of water – maximum shielding
