Dave’s study of Joshua 10:13I spent a lot of time with this passage in my study on non-linear time.
Joshua 10:11 And it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel, while they were at the descent of Beth-horon, that Jehovah cast down great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were more who died with the hailstones than they whom the children of Israel slew with the sword. 12 Then spake Joshua to Jehovah in the day when Jehovah delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel; and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; And thou, Moon, in the valley of Aijalon. 13 And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, Until the nation had avenged themselves of their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jashar? And the sun stayed in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.
This version of Book of Jasher is a translation of a Hebrew book printed in 1613. Sepir Ha Yasher, the Hebrew title of this book, means the 'Book of the Upright', or 'the Upright or Correct Record'. This title was misread as 'Jasher', and at some point Jasher was treated as a proper name; however the pronoun 'the' (hebrew 'ha') never preceeds proper names.
Book of Jasher, Chapter 89:7 Thou didst go forth for our salvation, with thine arm thou didst redeem thy people; thou didst answer us from the heavens of thy holiness, thou didst save us from ten thousands of people. 8 The sun and moon stood still in heaven, and thou didst stand in thy wrath against our oppressors and didst command thy judgments over them. 9 All the princes of the earth stood up, the kings of the nations had gathered themselves together, they were not moved at thy presence, they desired thy battles.
The argument made by the scientific effect of the gravity pull by Planet-7X is in error for several reasons.First – just speaking science only – if the gravity of Planet-7X tugged at the mass of earth to the point that it stopped rotating, then:
What Would Happen if the Earth Stopped Spinning?
Universe Today, FRASER CAIN, JUNE 17, 2010
www.universetoday.com/66570/what-would-happen-if-the-earth-stopped-spinning/“The first thing to think about is the momentum of everything on the surface of the Earth. You’re held down by gravity and you’re whizzing through space at a rotational velocity of 1,674.4 km/h (at the equator). You can’t feel it because of momentum. Just like how you can’t feel that you’re moving in a car going down the highway. But you feel the effects when you stop, or get into an accident. And so, if the Earth suddenly stopped spinning, everything on the surface of the Earth at the equator would suddenly be moving at more than 1,600 km/hour sideways. The escape velocity of Earth is about 40,000 km/hour, so that isn’t enough to fly off into space; but it would cause some horrible damage as everything flew in a ballistic trajectory sideways. Imagine the oceans sloshing sideways at 1,600 km/hour.”
Secondly – a serious study of the Hebrew text, from ‘Commentary on the Bible, by Adam Clarke, (1831): “The effect of this command is related, Jos 10:13, in the following words: - וידם השמש וירח עמד vaiyiddom Hashshemesh Veyareach amad, And the sun was dumb or silent and the moon stood still. And in the latter clause of this verse it is added: And the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day. … Consider that the word דום dom, in the text, refers to the withholding or restraining this influence (of the sun), so that the cessation of the earth's motion might immediately take place. … His mode of expression evidently considers the sun as the great ruler or master in the system; and all the planets (or at least the earth) moving in their respective orbits at his command. He therefore desires him, in the name and by the authority of his Creator, to suspend his mandate with respect to the earth's motion, and that of its satellite, the moon.
… He speaks to the sun, the cause (under God) of all these motions, as his great archetype did when, in the storm on the sea of Tiberias, he rebuked the wind first, and then said to the waves, Peace! be still! Σιωπα, πεφιμωσο· Be Silent! be Dumb! Mar 4:39; and the effect of this command was a cessation of the agitation in the sea, because the wind ceased to command it, that is, to exert its influence upon the waters.
The terms in this command are worthy of particular note: Joshua does not say to the sun, Stand still, as if he had conceived him to be running his race round the earth; but, Be silent or inactive, that is, as I understand it, Restrain thy influence - no longer act upon the earth, to cause it to revolve round its axis; a mode of speech which is certainly consistent with the strictest astronomical knowledge; and the writer of the account, whether Joshua himself or the author of the book of Jasher, in relating the consequence of this command is equally accurate, using a word widely different when he speaks of the effect the retention of the solar influence had on the moon: in the first case the sun was silent or inactive, דום dom; in the latter, the moon stood still, עמד amad. The standing still of the moon, or its continuance above the horizon, would be the natural effect of the cessation of the solar influence, which obliged the earth to discontinue her diurnal rotation, which of course would arrest the moon; and thus both it and the sun were kept above the horizon, probably for the space of a whole day. …
At the conclusion of the 13th verse a different expression is used when it is said, So the sun stood still, it is not דסם dom, but עמד amad; ויעמד השמש vaiyaamod hashshemesh, which expression, thus varying from that in the command of Joshua, may be considered as implying that in order to restrain his influence which I have assumed to be the cause of the earth's motion, the sun himself became inactive, that is, ceased to revolve round his own axis, which revolution is probably one cause, not only of the revolution of the earth, but of all the other planetary bodies in our system, and might have affected all the planets at the time in question; ….
Such a cessation of motion in one planet could not take place without disordering the motions of all the rest;… “
Dave’s summary strict reading of the Hebrew is not consistent with the earth rotation being stopped, or even slowed. It is consistent with a pause in movement, rotational or otherwise, of all the planetary bodies of our solar system, including the rotation of the sun itself. -
TIME STOOD STILL! - Which is a much bigger miracle than a large body passing through or solar system. How long was the ‘Long day of Joshua.’ Planet-7X theory suggest 12hrs.Again from ‘Commentary on the Bible, by Adam Clarke, (1831): It seems necessary here to answer the question, At what time of the day did this miracle take place? The expression בחצי השמים bachatsi hashshamayim, in the midst of heaven, seems to intimate that the sun was at that time on the meridian of Gibeon, and consequently had one half of its course to run; and this sense of the place has been strongly contended for as essential to the miracle, for the greater display of the glory of God: "Because," say its abettors, "had the miracle been wrought when the sun was near the going down, it might have been mistaken for some refraction of the rays of light, occasioned by a peculiarly moist state of the atmosphere in the horizon of that place, or by some such appearance as the Aurora Borealis."
And the Israelites themselves must behold with astonishment and wonder that the setting sun hasted not to go down about a whole day, affording them supernatural time totally to destroy a routed foe …”
Get that – “supernatural time”From John Gill's Exposition of the Bible: “… and hasted not to go down about a whole day; which was either artificial or natural; if an artificial day, then it stood still but twelve hours; if a natural day, twenty four hours; and accordingly the length of the day must be judged of; if it was at noon when it stood still, and continued so a natural day, or twenty four hours, then as it had gone six hours to noon, and, after it returned to its motion, had six more to go to its setting, this day must be thirty six hours long; and so the Jews commonly say; but if an artificial day, or twelve hours, then it was but a day of twenty four hours; but if this was, as the Jews say, on the third of Tammuz, which answers to part of June, and was in the summer solstice, on the longest day in the year, when their days consisted of fourteen hours, this will make this long day four hours longer.”
``Did not the sun go back by his means? and was not one day as long as two?'' (Sirach 46:4)
What is the Sirach text? - The Book of the All-Virtuous Wisdom of Joshua ben Sira, commonly called the Wisdom of Sirach or simply Sirach, and also known as The Book Ecclesiasticus, abbreviated as Ecclus, or Ben Sira, is a work of ethical teachings from the early 2nd century B.C.E. (approximately 200-175 B.C.E.) written by the Jewish scribe Shimon ben Yeshua ben Eliezer ben Sira of Jerusalem.
There are numerous citations of Sirach in the Talmud and works of rabbinic literature (as "ספר בן סירא", e.g., Hagigah 13a). Despite not finding ultimate acceptance into the scriptural canon of Judaism, it was read as scripture by some Jews. For instance, it was included in the canon of the Jewish Septuagint, the 2nd century BCE Greek version of the Jewish scriptures used by Diaspora Jews. Sirach is accepted as part of the Christian biblical canon by Catholics, Eastern Orthodox, Anglican, and most Oriental Orthodox (Coptic) but not by Protestants.
Dave’s conclusion. The Planet-7X theory uses Joshua 10:13 as evidence of a gravitational tug upon planet earth causing it to slow in its rotation, or stop in its rotation, for 12 hrs. If all you know is Western Tradition’s Roman Christendom’s theology this might seem like a plausible correlation.
However, a better understanding of the original Hebrew scripture paints a much larger miracle of a non-linear time event.Additionally, scientifically speaking, the science of earth sopping its rotation would yield a catastrophic impact upon the earth’s surface which is not addressed by the Planet-7X theory
Am I saying that the Planet-7X theory is wrong – NO!
Although, I strongly disagree with this one mall tid-bit of presented evidence.
If anyone is interested is studying the Hebrew used here, or asking a Rabbinic scholar about Hebrew meanings lost to the mythology of Roman Christendom, I suggest this web-site:
